A patient registration does not mean unlimited purchasing or unrestricted transportation. D.C.'s medical cannabis rules include a rolling purchase limit, and responsible use also requires secure storage, careful transportation, and attention to places where District law does not control.

This guide summarizes practical basics. It is not legal or medical advice. Check current official information at https://abca.dc.gov/page/patients and ask ABCA or a qualified professional when your situation is unusual.

The current rolling 30-day purchase limit

ABCA states that a registered patient may purchase up to eight ounces of medical cannabis during a rolling 30-day period. The word rolling matters. The window moves forward each day and considers purchases made during the previous 30 days; it is not simply a new allowance on the first day of a calendar month.

Keep receipts and avoid assuming that a purchase from a different licensed retailer will not count. The program can apply the limit across licensed transactions. Product forms may be handled by applicable equivalency rules, so ask the retailer or ABCA if you are uncertain how a specific item affects your total.

Buy for a clear plan, not the maximum

A legal limit is a ceiling, not a recommendation. Choose an amount that matches your intended use, storage capacity, and product stability. New patients may benefit from buying fewer formats at once so they can read labels carefully and avoid confusing packages.

Keep products in secure storage

Use a locked or controlled-access location away from children, teenagers, guests, and pets. Keep edible cannabis separate from ordinary food, and never place it in an unlabeled container that could be mistaken for candy or a snack. Original packaging can preserve important serving, batch, and warning information.

Heat, light, moisture, and air can affect quality. Follow the package's storage directions. Do not transfer products into a vehicle glove box or another hot location for long periods.

Transport only when necessary and lawful

Do not drive impaired. Secure the product before moving the vehicle and avoid opening or using it in the car. Cannabis cannot be transported across state lines, even between jurisdictions that have their own cannabis laws. Federal property and federally controlled areas can also have separate restrictions inside Washington, D.C.

Read serving information before use

Product formats act differently. Inhaled products may be felt sooner than edibles, while edible effects can be delayed. Concentrates can contain high cannabinoid levels. Start with the product label, use conservatively, and allow adequate time before considering more. Seek medical guidance for health conditions, pregnancy, or medication-interaction concerns.

Dispose of unwanted products carefully

Prevent access by children, pets, or anyone for whom the product was not intended. Follow local guidance and package instructions. Do not flush products or discard them where they can be easily recovered.
